I have to say when I downloaded Barry Connell’s Essential Mix two nights ago I thought I was going to post it under happier circumstances. As many of you will already know by now, Barry passed away this morning (24th April 2008). As I write this I still can’t believe what I have heard. Instead of encouraging you to download this mix as a way of furthering a talented DJ’s career, it is with great sadness that I invite you to download Barry’s mix as a reminder of the talent and enthusiasm he had behind the decks.
Being a club promoter I’m in the lucky position of being given a lot of CD’s by DJ’s when I’m out and about. To be honest most of the mixes I get from bedroom DJ’s are good, but Barry’s, was a level above. Being able to DJ in the house is one thing, being able to do it well in front of a big crowd or on the radio is another. It’s here that Barry excelled. Having watched Barry do a flawless mix on Beat106 and tear up countless DJ gigs at Inside Out and elsewhere, I knew without question he would rock Inside Out during his recent ‘Essential Mix.’ The greatest tragedy is that on reaching a pinnacle in his career, he is unable to go on and reap the rewards of his hard work and perseverance and share them with Amanda and family.
Barry was a good friend, and a good guy. He’d take time to speak to everyone, was always laugh to be around and he will be sorely missed. Also, he was the only person I know that went camping in Versace jumpers! I hope you enjoy Barry’s Essential Mix as much as I know he enjoyed doing it. It’s a good and I think, a fitting way to remember him. To Amanda and Barry’s family I am very sorry for your loss and wish you my deepest sympathies.
Simon
